-
Is
my Volvo differential strong enough?
Yes,
unless you plan to do serious drag racing (i.e. slicks and limited
slip differential) you will have no problem.
-
What
model Volvos can be converted?
We
currently offer kits and in-house installation for 200, 700, and 940
series sedans, wagons, and coupes.
-
Is
one model easier to convert than others?
No,
the ease of installation is about the same for all models. Choose a
car with the body style, color, and options you prefer.
-
What
transmission is used?
The
Ford transmission is used for both auto and manual transmission
conversions and the Volvo transmission setup does not limit the choice.
-
My
car is an automatic now. Can I put in a Ford 5-speed?
Yes,
you can end up with either a manual or automatic transmission in
your converted Volvo regardless of the transmission it was originally
built with.
-
Does
the extra weight change the handling?
On
average, one hundred pounds is added to the Volvo, which doesn't
adversely affect every day handling or braking. For high performance
handling, suspensions can be tuned with a variety of recommended
after-market components.
-
I
don't own a Volvo now, but I want to convert one. How do we find one?
Local
publications such as Auto Trader and Volvo dealers or independent
Volvo repair shops are good sources. If we are going to convert your
car, we'd be happy to search our area. We also offer pick-up and/or
delivery of the Volvo for $.80 per mile.
-
Can
we supply engines and other parts?
Yes,
we can. Some of our customers have found it convenient to hire us to
ship them all the parts they need.
-
Is
there anyone in my area to do the conversions?
Call
us and we will check it out for you. (207)693-4822 Monday through
Thursday 7am to 5pm (eastern time)
-
Will
all my original Volvo accessories and gauges still function?
Yes,
the interior and exterior of the car are unchanged in both function
and appearance.
-
Will
I have problems registering and inspecting the car?
Seattle,
Washington is the only area we know of with rules prohibiting engine
swaps. Also there is the possibility that Salt Lake City, Utah
residents may encounter difficulties passing inspection. This rule
applies to cars made after 1981 and registered in the counties
containing these cities. To our knowledge, cars built with our kits
have never failed a state emissions test. To avoid any potential
problems a kit buyer should check his/her local laws concerning the
conversion prior to beginning it.
-
Are
other Ford V8's usable?
The
kits are expressly designed for a 1986 to 1993 Mustang 5.0 H.O.
Other versions of a Ford small block(Windsor, 302 TBI, 5.0 non-H.O.
or others) can be used with various degrees of difficulty. The
Mustang drive-train is the easiest to use. If contemplating another
engine call for advice.
-
How
long does a conversion usually take?
We
can normally do a complete 5.0 H.O. conversion in 2 to 3 weeks.
-
How
much does a conversion cost?
The
conversion kit is $925. In addition, you'll need a complete 5.0
engine and transmission which includes all belt-driven accessories,
emission controls, fuel injection, wiring, computer, etc. The price
for a used Ford drive-train in our area usually ranges from $1000 to
$2500. Additional expenses for exhaust system and driveshaft will
vary between $300 and $800. We can do a complete turn-key with a stock,
used 5.0 automatic for as little as $6900. Since the flat fee
for the conversion which includes the kit is $5,000, the final cost
is greatly dependent on the cost of the parts that meet your needs. A
more typical total cost with a low-mileage stock engine and
transmission, with a new dual exhaust system, averages around $7,900.
Engine, suspension, adding a clutch pedal to an automatic car and
other custom modifications, as well as general repairs, are available
at additional cost and can be quoted on an individual basis. We
would be happy to talk to a shop of your choice to help them
establish a labor quote for you.
